Language Teaching and Cognition

In detail, the students are expected to recognize the basic principles and concepts of cognition and language (teaching) which in turn they are able to apply them in language teaching and research. The course discusses the Concepts of Cognition in relation to language acquisition, culture, bilingual classroom, language teaching, comprehension and production & Research in Language and Cognition.

ELT Reserach Methods and Statistics

This two-credit semester course is an ELT Research Methods and Statistics offered to semester 1. This course aims at facilitating the students to: 1) broaden their understanding of fundamental concepts in ELT Research Methods and statistics, including terminology and common terms; 2) recognize sources of research ideas, common sense, knowledge and science; and types of research; 3) describe descriptive Statistics, Population and Sample, Inferential Statistics, Parametric and Nonparametric Statistics, 3) make decision on problem solution through the application of experimental and quantitative studies, and conduct a mini research project. Through this course, the students are encouraged to undertake research projects to facilitate the production of knowledge and the innovation in English language teaching and learning.

Foundation of Science

This course is an elementary, and yet comprehensive, introduction to Philosophy of Science. Philosophy of Science is the branch of philosophy, which aims to study and investigate the nature and methodology of natural science in general. Although, strictly speaking, Philosophy of Science is different from the philosophy of a particular science like, for example, Philosophy of Physics, this course also attempts to provide philosophical reflections on certain basic concepts employed in physical science. This course strengthens the students understanding of basic philosophical concepts and their applications in any branches sciences and technology, which are then particularly applicable to language teaching and learning. The issues to be discussed in this course include: Meaning and Origin of Science,  Natural laws, scientific explanation and prediction, the demarcation between science and non-science,  realism and antirealism, causation and science, Methods of Science, Inductivism, Logical Empiricism, Falsificationism, Incommensurability and Relativism.

This unit is a 2 credit course and it will introduce students with principles and methods of developing tourism-related business plans. Concepts, issues, and formats of writing up business plans will be discussed in the course where students will also be peer tutors of each other. Individual students will present a business proposal as the final product of learning.

5TP3 Research on ELT

This unit is a 4 credit course and it will introduce students with principles and methods of designing, implementing, and reporting ELT studies. Parametric and non-parametric as well as bivariate and multivariate analyses and inferences will be trained and independently practiced. Problems sets will be distributed to individual and group of students as parts of students' learning portfolio. Simplified research proposal and report will be the final individual product of the class.

žThis course introduces students to the basic principles, concepts and methods of research in English language learning and teaching. It describes research paradigms and ethics in foreign language. The course acquaints students with fundamental concepts of research. At the end of the study, students are expected to be able to use research methodology and method, whenever appropriate, in their own research undertaking. Overall, this course aims to assist students to develop and produce research proposals based on their own inquiries.
