ELT Curriculum and Materials Development

Generally speaking, this course introduces graduate students of English Education of UNRAM to the core principles and general understanding of developing English Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum and materials development. Initially, students will be exposed to the fundamental concepts of ELT curriculum, which covers (1) the route of curriculum development; (2) a variety of curriculum designs, (3) analyses of the needs for the renewal of curriculum, and (4) problems and controversies concerning curriculum implementation.  The expected learning outcome at this stage is that students will be able to analyze and evaluate the current problems concerning the production and implementation of the 2013 national curriculum. In the further stage, students are focused to learn to apply their knowledge to (1) design curriculum, (2) develop ELT materials, and (3) devise evaluation or assessment for the curriculum designed. The class will be conducted by employing an online discussion-based & task-based teaching method. Students are expected to read the prescribed texts, powerpoints and watch videos beforehand, discuss assigned topics in the virtual classroom, whenever possible connect what they read with their own experiences, conduct online research projects of their own interests pertaining to curriculum and materials development, and design and create English teaching materials for the classroom presentation. By doing so, students will be well equipped with the ability to critically analyze, design, evaluate and create ELT curriculum and teaching materials. Ultimately students will be able to produce the drafts of curriculum and materials development projects based on their own interests.
