Academic Writing 4B/2021

English Semantics
As a study of meaning, SEMANTICS provides the students with opportunities to examine word families and order related words by degree or intensity. It is expected that when communicating, the students will choose words appropriate for the context and audience, and that they will employ strategies for generating, extending and retrieving vocabulary. In short, they will be able to convey richer meaning when speaking and/or writing.
In detail, the students are expected to recognize the basic principles and concepts of semantics and pragmatics. Besides, they are provided with the way languages organize and express meanings through words, parts of words and sentences. To achieve the learning objective, this course deals with: 1) relations of words to other words, and sentences to other sentences, 2) the importance of ‘tone of voice’ and ‘body language’ in face-to-face exchanges, and the role of context in any communication, 3) comparisons of features in other languages, 4) exploration of the knowledge speakers of a language must have in common to enable them to communicate, 5) discussions of the nature of language; the structure of discourse; the distinction between lexical and grammatical meaning, 6) examination of lexical relations such as synonymy, antonymy, and hyponymy; ambiguity; implication; factivity; 7) aspectuality, 8) modality and pragmatics, including presupposition and entailment.

Poetry 4D
This course is designed to develop the insight and understanding of the students about poetry as one genre of literature beside prose and drama. This course will introduce the basic concepts of poetry, the types and elements of poetry works along with the practice of analysis and criticism on some prominent English poems.

Academic Vocabulary and Corpus 2023 (SEMT 4, GENAP)
MK Academic Vocabulary and Corpus ini merupakan lanjutan dari MK Vocabulary Building pada Semester Ketiga. Materi yang terdapat di dalamnya menitikberatkan pada peningkatan kemampuan: (1) memahami kosakata bidang akademik (misalnya kosakata yang sering ditemukan dalam abstract atau introduction sebuah karya ilmiah), (2) mengenali sinonim, antonim, dan famili kata (word family), dan (3) menggunakan kosakata dimaksud dalam konteks kalimat yang tepat.

MK Bahasa Inggris 2 2023 (Jaswadi Putera)
MK Bahasa Inggris 2 ini
merupakan lanjutan dari MK Bahasa Inggris 1. Materi yang terdapat di dalamnya menitikberatkan pada peningkatan kemampuan berbicara (dalam bentuk presentasi,
diskusi, tanyajawab) dan kemampuan tata bahasa khususnya kalimat pasif dalam Bahasa Inggris. Kemampuan berbicara dan mengungkapkan pendapat dalam bahasa Inggris di depan umum tentu sangat penting bagi mahasiswa di abad 21 ini. Tak kalah penting juga adalah kemampuan menguasai tenses dalam bentuk pasif (passive voice). Kesalahan penggunaan kalimat pasif dalam bahasa Inggris amat sering terjadi dan kesalahan ini fatal karna akan mengubah makna kalimat secara drastis. Ambil contoh, kalimat "Ayam dimakan oleh Andi" yang diterjemahkan menjadi oleh seorang mahasiswa menjadi "Chicken eats Andi" yang artinya "Ayam makan Andi" adalah kesalahan fatal karna mengubah makna secara total. Kesalahan ini mungkin terjadi karna ketidaktahuan mahasiswa tentang struktur tatabahasanya atau kurangnya materi tentang kalimat pasif saat diajar di level SMP/SMA. Maka dari itu, kemampuan berbicara dan memahami tatabahasa khususnya kalimat pasif amat penting untuk dikuasai oleh mahasiswa khususnya semester 2 di semua prodi.

EXTENSIVE LISTENING with Mrs.KH KH
Course Description:
This course is aimed at facilitating students to raise their interest and awareness on the listening habits to be linguistically, cognitively, and socially improved through series of extensive listening activities. In 16 meetings, students will be exposed to series of independent extensive listening activities (listening only, listening and reading, listening and viewing, or listening, reading, and viewing in tandem) group sharing and discussion, and individual project and presentation focussing on the green listening: waste, pollution, and deforestation to instil their environmental sensitivity.
Practically, students will be tutored and assisted to self-select various authentic listening materials, engage with and make meaning to the listening texts, write or speak and reflect their listening journey and ideas in a digital portfolio and reflective journal.

INTERMEDIATE ORAL COMMUNICATION with Mrs. KH KH 2021
Course Description:
This course is aimed at boosting students confidence and fluency in expressing their ideas on various topics in personal and social context within the intermediate level. In 16 meetings, students will be exposed to various authentic materials either written or oral texts to enrich their lexical resources, train their grammatical sensitivity, broaden their knowledge, and finally facilitate their speaking fluency. Practically, students will be tutored and assisted to self-select various authentic materials, to engage in individual and group activities, and to reflectively share their ideas and learning experiences.
Course objectives:
By the end of the course, after actively participating all meetings, participants are expected to be able to :
- properly self-select various authentic materials to enrich their lexical resources, train their grammatical sensitivity, broaden their knowledge, and finally facilitate their speaking fluency
- have adequate fluency and confidence to express and share their ideas on particular topics in intermediate level
- actively engage in sustained autonomous learning
- reflectively share their learning and ideas through multimodal media; Digital Reflective Portfolio (DRP), Poster, and Podcast.

EXTENSIVE READING
This Extensive Reading course focuses on increasing the amount of
English input students receive by utilizing extensive reading in which students
are given freedom to choose their own topic which they
think are interested to be discussed and for this end, they have to find
supported articles related to the topic in order to give them background
knowledge, so that they know more about the topic they have chosen. While
reading, they are discouraged the over-use of dictionary, however, they are encouraged
to jot down the words they come across in vocabulary notebook and they can look
them up after they have finished reading. After reading an article/passage, they
are asked to write a summary or a review and do a short presentation on what they
have read.

BUSINESS ENGLISH with Mrs.KH KH 2021
This course is designed to enhance students’ English skills in pre-intermediate level as well as business related knowledge and skills in preparing them in addressing the challenges of competitive international business. During the teaching learning process, students will be exposed to various language inputs focusing on business nested topics either in the form of written or audio visual texts. They will also be engaged in individual, pair, and group works to co-construct their understanding towards particular business topic and collaboratively exercise their skills of communication, confidence, and critical thinking.
Despite the students' engagement in constant classroom interactions, their involvement in systemic self-study will also be considered through dialogic and negotiable course agendas.
